Respect and Memorialization

Respect for the donor is the cornerstone of our Anatomical Donation Program. This respect stems from the donor's selfless decision to contribute to the advancement of medical education and research. It manifests in treating the donor's body with the utmost dignity and care throughout the entire donation process, from initial contact and transportation to utilization for education or research and final disposition. This respect extends to the donor's family, ensuring they are informed and supported throughout the process, and their wishes regarding return of remains are honored.

Memorialization provides a tangible way to honor the invaluable contributions of anatomical donors. At the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, students hold an annual Donor Memorial Ceremony. Students lead this event, which includes a variety of contributions including reciting their poetry, displaying art, and performance of musical pieces. Families of donors are invited to attend this ceremony, and to speak to the students if they would like to.

This act of remembrance not only acknowledges the generosity of our donors, but also provides comfort and closure for their families. Memorialization also serves as a powerful reminder of the human element behind the students’ studies and work, fostering empathy and a deeper appreciation for the gift of anatomical donation.
